What is Engineering Management?

So my first semester in the Engineering Management (EM) program at UT comes to a close this month. Since I have been in this program, the question I have been asked quite often by peers and co-workers is "what is engineering management." After having explained this countless times, I have determined the best and quickest way to answer this question is the following: "It's a MBA for engineers." And this is exactly what this program is about. Its aim is to bridge the gap between engineering and management (hence engineering management). Yeah you probably could go and get a MBA (just like everyone else) or you could go a different route and get degree which you can standout with and can actually use. The main selling point for the EM program is that you learn all the material as you would in a MBA program (and then some), but the material is geared towards an engineering/technical environment. And so perhaps a MBA will prepare me to work at Wall Street or some financial institution, but it's not what I want to do. I plan on being involved in a technical environment, and this program is best at preparing me for a management position in a technical environment.

Another great benefit of this program is that they understand that you have work and family. Therefore, you only go to school one weekend (Friday/Saturday) a month. Does it get any better than that? And let’s admit it, online classes just don't cut it. So you go to school one weekend a month for two years (~ 48 days) and then you graduate. Thus, you can keep your day job and go to school. There are several reasons why anyone should consider the EM program at UT, but I think their selling point is how they focus the material towards an engineering/technical environment and how they gear the EM program towards a working individual (who may have a family).

Priti,

sorry for taking a while to respond back, but to answer your question, the class size in the EM courses is about 30 students. It may seem like a large class size considering its a master's level course, but the courses seem to still provide the students the individual attention they would want. I guess that's why I like the way the courses are organized.... attentive to the student's needs. I hope this gives you some sort of description of the class.

Adnan,

Sorry for not responding sooner to your concern. I think you need to think carefully about what you want to do in the future. I have had other's also ask me for my opinion, and I have told them the same thing that I will tell you. You need to determine what you want to do in the future. Do you want to work for yourself, or does it not matter if you work for someone else. Also, do you always want to do what you currently do? If you want to transition from a technical role to a managerial role, then an advance degree in management will help you out. If you want to stay in the technical role, then a management degree may not provide you the leverage that you seek; perhaps an advanced technical degree will better meet your needs. Also, if you want to open up your own business, then you need to figure out how easily you can open up your own business. If it's possible, then perhaps an advance degree in management will help you out in getting promotions. I also believe that a strong technical background (educational and experience-wise) will be required. I think a technical Ph.D will help establish yourself in the construction industry, and a management degree to help you with the managerial aspect of business.

When it comes to MBA vs management degree, you may find a management degree helpful like the Engineering Management program offered at UT Austin. This program differs from an MBA program by helping you to become better managerial-wise. I've heard that MBA focuses more on the stock-market, and financial aspects which would be better suited for those individuals that want to stay in a financial industry. That's why an engineering management degree would better suit your needs. Nonetheless, an engineering management degree and MBA both teach you the same thing, but focus (indirectly) on different industries. However, because an engineering management degree isn't widely recognized, you may have difficulty in having people accept your degree competitively as an MBA, even though you would learn the same thing from either degree. But an engineering management degree is slowly getting recognition. I had the same challenges when trying to convince my manager that my engineering management was just like an MBA but focused on our (chemical) industry. But, they had a fixed impression of only accepting MBA's. But now my manager is slowly accepting the worthiness of my degree, especially when I can go to school and work without any sacrifice.

I hope that I have been able to help you out in clearing up any confusions. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

Hi,
Thanks for your info. regarding the EM program.I have enrolled for this program for Spring'09.I am quiet excited about the same and your article has encouraged me all the more.
But I have one concern. In your first article you have mentioned about the unfamiliarity of this course in the industry.Actually currently I am not working and doing this course on my H4 visa status, but soon hope to get my H1 and then apply for a job thru the UT placement services.Do you think it will be difficult?
Thanks,
Teema.

Yaser,

As far as I know, I don't think there is a docorate degree program through CLEE (center of lifelong engineering education). If I find out something different, I'll let you know.

Teema,

I am happy to hear that I was able to encourage you to join the EM program at UT. I think you will find the program very valuable.

Although the EM program is not as recognized as the MBA program is, I do think that as more EM programs are established, the EM program will be as acceptable as an MBA. I hope that I am not implying that the EM program is unknown, but from my experience it isn't well known. When you complete your EM program, I don't think you will have difficulties in finding a job. If you are given the opportunity to provide information about the EM program, people, including managers, will see the value in the program. Thus, I do not think that by enrolling in the EM program instead of the MBA program will cause you to have difficulties in finding a job.
